Train to Pakistan

Image
Many things inspire me to read books, but this is the reason I started to read this book. One of the Sikh people spends time writing historical novels in his house. When his wife notices this activity, she tells him, "Nobody can buy your novel, it is such a wasteful thing you do." But unfortunately, his novel was selected for the Groove award in 1954, and also more than one lakh copies were sold, despite his wife's wise words. His name is Kushwant Singh, one of India's most popular novelists. The story starts from Mano Majar, the fantasy village situated on the border of India and Pakistan in the district of Gujarat. The village contains only one Hindu, named Ram Lal, the money lender of the village. He is murdered by some dacoits at the beginning of the story. The remaining population comprises Muslims and Sikhs who live together. They all have the same mentality about freedom, often saying, "Why do we want freedom? The white guys are so good compare...

""Cancer Warriors "

Image
On February 2, the Indian government's budget allocated funds for the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. In my previous blog, I discussed the severity of the issue. Nearly one lakh women are affected by chronic cervical cancer, with seventy thousand losing their lives to the illness. This allocation is a crucial step forward for Indian women's health. Despite this, the current focus on social media is the disappearance stunt of Poonam Pandey, which has gone viral. When celebrities face chronic illnesses like cancer, it becomes a topic of conversation for many. I admire those who fight cancer, whom I call "cancer warriors." They show incredible strength and resilience. For instance, our beloved cricketer Yuvraj Singh battled seminoma lung cancer, undergoing four rounds of chemotherapy. Despite experiencing severe chest pain and vomiting blood during matches, he continued to play, even scoring 362 runs and taking 15 wickets in the 2011 World Cup. During...

"Why always women?"

I felt very sad when I heard the news of singer Bhava Tharani's death due to the chronic illness of stomach cancer at her early age. I am addicted to her voice, especially the "Mayil Pola" song from Bharati; it is a pinnacle song for her. When I see female cancer patients in my radiation oncology department, more than 80% of them are homemakers. That's the reason they are affected by cancer. They are carrying their families, not themselves. This is the reason for them to have irregular eating habits, not maintaining a healthy BMI, going to bed late, and waking up early in the morning. Some of them married in their teenage years and also got pregnant at an early stage. This is the reason for their bodies undergoing irregular hormone changes. According to 2020 data, 78.5% of women had cervix and breast cancer. Both cancers highly result from irregular hormone secretion in the body. The last time I talked to my sister-in-law, I asked her, "Di...

"Man's search for meaning in the holocaust"

Image
Last week, I read a book suggested by actor Kamal Hassan in Big Boss Season 6, "Man's Search for Meaning" written by Viktor Frankl. This book is based on the Holocaust in Nazi camps. Viktor is a Jewish psychological doctor who is struck in the Nazi camp in World war II . He shared his entire chronic prison experience of the camp. I was wondering because this type of book, they wrote their sorrows and the burdens they faced in the camp. But he is different; not only that, all entire Jews are different. They are not bothering and worrying about what happened to them. They sing, get married, do the artwork, make poems, and chat with mates in a concentration camp. Viktor says how they survive in the camp; they all share one blanket for each of the seven members in low Celsius. They get water from melting snowballs. They cuddle each other for warming. When they are on the train, they have a sparrow view at each stopping station, praying not to be in Sobibor. Sobibor is in th...

"White Nights of Russia"

Image
Last year, I went to the Chennai Book Fair with a well-thought-out plan to buy numerous books. However, this time, I was occupied with my internship at college. Despite that, I arranged for my so-called friend to buy a book for me, which I selected through a video call at the book fair. When she asked for a book recommendation, my brain struggled to decide. Finally, a flash in my mind led me to suggest the novel "White Nights" written by Fyodor Dostoevsky. In response to her inquiry about why I recommended the novel and its summary, I explained that across various languages, filmmakers have adapted this story into over a hundred movies and short films. "White Nights" is a short novel, spanning four nights and one morning, with a dual hero narrative. The protagonist is a girl living with her grandmother in St. Petersburg, Russia, during the winter season. She falls in love with a man living upstairs, who communicates with her through letters. As she waits for his re...

"Election year"

Image
I'm eager to receive my voter ID when I turn eighteen, granting me the opportunity to vote for someone who will govern my country. Unfortunately, in a previous election, I voted for a candidate who lost. Many around the world are experiencing this excitement as over 40 countries, including the UK, USA, Iran, Canada, and Russia, are facing elections. Not only economically wealthy nations, but also our neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives are gripped by election anticipation. I was particularly interested in the UK and the USA due to both countries being led by individuals of Indian origin. I believe Vivek Ramaswamy might have a chance in the USA this time. In Russia, Vladimir Putin, a military figure with a history of conflicts with Ukraine, seems poised for re-election. Canada's Justin Trudeau has already engaged with Khalistan in politics. Turning to our neighbors, Bangladesh has initiated its election process. In Pakistan, former Pri...
